Solo shows return to the Calder Gallery 30/04/2008
After a lengthy break it’s great to be able to announce that we are once more showing individual artists as solo shows! The first of the new season is a selection of resident artist Phil Withersby’s latest work as well as some of his earlier work out for another airing. Excitingly for us here it’s also the third anniversary of the Calder Gallery springing into existence in 2005! We cannot believe how quickly it has gone and we are deeply grateful for all the support that we have had from artists and customers, without whom there would be no gallery. There will be a do at the Gallery on the 30th April to celebrate this and the launch of Phil’s exhibition. Other shows planned to date include Kate Lycett’s eagerly awaited solo that previews on 24th June, and a Summer Prints 2008 mixed exhibition that starts on 22nd July. Kate will need no introduction to many of you and her new originals are already being sought after… the success of the Print Show last year has prompted us to stage another this coming Summer, with some favourites from last year and some new printmakers standing by to send us their work. We also have a great selection of other work currently on show – David Quirke, Jim Wright, Kate Boyce, Ian Phillips, James Alderson, Keith Mountain, Barry Spence …… We look forward to seeing you soon.

Patricia McAllister 30/04/2008
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Patricia McAllister. We have been fortunate to have had her figurative sculpture to grace the Gallery for the last couple of years and she became a good friend to us. We extend our condolences to family at this sad time.

A bit of a break 22/03/2008
We are having a bit of a break, so please note that the gallery will be closed from Sunday, 23rd March and will reopen on Saturday, 29th March. We are presently planning our exhibitions for the rest of the year and will be putting the details on the website when they are finalised – all exciting new work! Phil has been very busy painting and we hope to have his exhibition soon – we will keep you informed. Many of you will already know that during the Festival weeks this Summer Kate Lycett will be having her first solo exhibition with us. This is already generating huge amounts of interest. For those of you who haven’t had a chance to pop in recently, the Gallery has a lovely mixed show at the moment, with constantly changing work as things sell. Kate Boyce has brought some of her latest work down, which very nicely combine the two styles in which she works. Come and see us if you can.

Christmas! 16/12/2007
Hope you are all coping with the stresses of preparing for Christmas and that you are further along than we are this year! If you are in town this coming weekend, we shall be serving free mulled wine to all our customers from 12pm (until it runs out!) We would be delighted to see you. We have recently added paintings by Barry Spence to our current show – his work is dynamic, swirling and imaginative and is well worth seeing. New sculpture in Gill Palmer’s inimitable style has arrived just in time for Christmas, being the perfect ‘something really different’ present. David Ainsworth’s pictures of 40’s and 50’s jazz greats, worked from little known photos of the period are another recent exciting addition as are Alison Hill’s intricately worked drawings of faded flowers in delicate and atmospheric colours. Check them out on the website (www.caldergallery.co.uk) or better still pop in and see us.
Christmas opening times: we are open normal hours until next Sunday the 23rd December at 5pm at which time we close for the Christmas break re-opening on Saturday 5th January at 10am.
Advance notice:
We are adjusting our opening hours with effect from January 5th:
Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm
Sundays 12pm to 4pm
We shall be closed on Bank Holidays.

All the latest... 30/11/2007
We have been changing the exhibition in the gallery in stages over the last few weeks and so by Wednesday, 5th Dec. there will be plenty of new pieces on display. There are paintings by a number of new artists to the gallery such as David Ainscough, Jim Wright and Alison Hill. Their work offers us something new Alison’s beautiful, delicate still life observations, Jim’s atmospheric landscapes and David’s amazing watercolours of jazz musicians during the 50’s. In August we had some tragic news about one of our much-loved artists, Gilda Dickinson. She passed away following a car accident. Her work has been extremely popular in the gallery for a couple of years and this was demonstrated during her solo exhibition earlier this year. We have offered Michelle, Gilda’s daughter, any support we can and are pleased to let you know about some of the exhibitions she is putting on of her mum’s work. They can be visited at Bury Art Gallery until 2nd Feb, The Coach House, Littleborough from 1st Dec – 5th Jan and at Mid Pennine Arts, Burnley from1st Dec – 15th Jan. Michelle has mentioned us having an exhibition next year of Gilda’s work and we are hoping to arrange that as soon as possible.

Latest news 17/11/2007
Latest news
Last week we hung the top room with a variety of new work. We have some of Pat Ellacott’s beautiful, sensitive cow drawings, which have already been much admired. Christopher Rainham has also brought a new selection of work now on display. One of the latest artists to exhibit with us is Alison Hill with her ‘ Winter’ series, sensitive ink and coloured pencil drawings of faded flowers and grasses. We are still gloating over all the new sculpture that has arrived over the past couple of weeks – work by Allan Scott, Eve Shepherd, Duncan Thurlby and Nicky Stone all jostling for position! Have a look at some of these whilst you are on the site.

Lots of new things.... 28/10/2007
We are delighted with our latest new sculptures. Allan Scott travelled down from Northumberland with his striking ‘Red Dress’ - now in the window. He also brought some beautiful bronze figures, which we believe will be popular. Another very welcome addition back are Duncan Thurlby’s dogs. All of his dogs have character but these really are exceptional! John Prescott’s amazing boxes continue to create a stir. James’s powerfully evocative landscapes have gained many admirers. We are also delighted to be showing for the first time anywhere two of David Quirk’s wonderful new landscapes. Finally, yesterday we were told by regular valued customers that the gallery was full of the most interesting, top quality work we have ever had. (We have been glowing ever since).

New Show 19/10/2007
We are delighted with our latest solo exhibition featuring the work of James Wheeler. His beautiful, atmospheric landscape paintings are based on the Yorkshire moors and his native Scotland, which are nicely complemented by his vignettes of city life in Paris.
This week we have also acquired a new Kate Lycett original ‘Silver Birches’. We have already sold out of the prints of it that she also brought down and are taking orders!
Some of our regular visitors will have missed Duncan Thurlby’s animals. Next week should see the arrival of two dogs, which our younger visitors are very welcome to stroke and name!
Since selling John Prescott’s Manhattan Dragon we have been without our usual large piece of sculpture in the window. That should be remedied in another week or two, by the arrival of a new piece by a new artist to the gallery. We really miss having something large and eye-catching to stop people in their tracks – I will say no more but watch this space!

Gallery closed for ten days... 26/09/2007
We are closed for ten days starting this Saturday the 29th September and will re-open on Wednesday 10th October. Messages and emails will be dealt with promptly upon our return.

Bits and pieces... 04/07/2007
Kate Boyce’s show continues to be very popular and if you haven’t yet been down to see it we urge you to try and find the time to drop in and see these vibrant and striking works. Kate has brought down three new works today (4th July) to replace some of the ones that have been sold. Don’t forget that the weekend sees the Open Studios again – see the listings on the Festival website, www.hebdenbridge.co.uk/festival . The Gallery’s resident artist, Phil Withersby is painting in the Gallery every day Wednesday to Sunday as part of this Open Studios event and will be happy to answer questions or just chat! PLEASE NOTE that the launch date of the Summer Prints show is AUGUST 2nd and not as has been shown on the Exhibitions page of the website. Different arrangements will be posted later for this launch. We had a lovely evening at the launch of Kate Boyce’s latest exhibition where her unique take on the landscape of West Yorkshire proved just as successful as ever. A super collection of vibrant and multi-layered images that is just stunning. Get a taste of what’s on offer elsewhere on our website – why not come along to the next one by signing up on the website or sending your email details to join our mailing list?
Other news – we have just collected a fresh batch of boxes from John Prescott that will be up on the website as soon as possible. They are as amazing as always!

Richard Wincer show opens 24/05/2007
Richard Wincer’s preview evening was a great success and the exhibition of his paintings and prints looks very exciting on the wall. Richard has a long history of exhibiting in London and in the north and so we are delighted to have this opportunity of showing his latest work. Preview evenings are always pleasant events, with the opportunity to meet the artist and enjoy the atmosphere and a free drink or two. Why not come along to the next one? The new work from Kate Lycett came in..and went out the same day! Prints of the latest paintings will be available soon. Patricia McAllister's latest piece 'Reclining Girl' has also arrived and is causing great interest in the window.

Updating Own Art 09/05/2007
First, a notice that we shall be closed on Thursday 10th May. This is for the best of reasons, namely that we are attending training in administering the new Own Art scheme. The bank underwriting the original scheme has pulled out and we look forward to working with the new supporters of this wonderful interest-free loan scheme for the purchase of original work. Gilda Dickinson’s exhibition is proving a continuing success and now has just two weeks to run. Don’t miss it! Other news – we are awaiting exciting new work by Kate Lycett, and new sculpture from Patricia McAllister. Keep in touch!

Anniversaries and openings 29/04/2007
Many thanks to all who came to Gilda’s opening. It was a lovely, pleasant evening and seemed to be enjoyed by all those attending. It is no surprise to us that her work is selling quickly so if you haven’t been down to see her exhibition yet don’t delay for too long!
Other news that we had almost forgotten was the fact that this weekend is the calder gallery’s second anniversary! Originally we had intended to organise some sort of celebration but other events have prevented this. Perhaps our third will prove to be an occasion we remember to mark in style…..

Latest news 15/04/2007
Easter has come and gone, with enjoyable visits from many of our regular customers and friends. Unbelievably we are already into the last week of James Alderson’s exhibition of Yorkshire landscapes and gorgeous skies – do try to catch them before the show finishes next Sunday, the 22nd April. Invites have gone out for our next exhibition which is Gilda Dickinson’s rich, dramatic local landscapes. New things in stock.... 05/04/2007

A new month, new things to see 04/03/2007
The new month has started with a mixed bag of weather in Hebden Bridge and a highly visible total eclipse of the moon on a cold Saturday night, but the Calder Gallery is always warm and welcoming. The new hang of the Spring Mixed Exhibition looks a treat and we look forward to seeing you soon. A nice moment last week was the fortunate coincidence of an artist arriving at the Gallery just as a lovely couple was buying one of her paintings. Rachel Bull’s bold and colourful screenprints based on images of Hebden Bridge are proving very popular – check them out on the website.

Bye Bye Chameleon! 23/02/2007
After a stay with us of some months, we have reluctantly said goodbye to Duncan Thurlby’s steel chameleon. The subject of many a ‘wow’ moment at the window, the chameleon was sold last week. More wonderful dogs by Duncan have taken his place. The Spring Mixed Exhibition is coming up for its first rehang after the weekend , with new work by Kate Boyce, Helen Thomas and Susan Laughton amongst the highlights for you to enjoy on your next visit

Open again 14/02/2007
That was the week that was! A hectic time, but we survived more or less intact. We’re looking forward to picking up the threads of the gallery – we’ve been busy since we reopened and the current good weather has brought people out in good numbers. Perhaps we’ll see you too in the near future. The mixed show is continuing to attract lots of positive responses and the first review of the works left on show is drawing near and we shall be putting up some new things and moving others. Always something good to see here!

Here be dragons! 20/01/2007

As ever we are just delighted to be surrounded every day by such wonderful and inspiring art works.

Happy New Year! 06/01/2007
Firstly, a belated wish to everyone for a very Happy New Year. We have been taking delivery of paintings for the mixed exhibition running from 10th January, and we're like a couple of kids at Christmas! A reminder that the Gallery will be closed all day on Sunday 7th January - sorry for any inconvenience.

Bright and cheerful! 03/01/2007
Whilst the weather has calmed down here in Hebden Bridge, it is now grey and dull outside, but warm, bright and stimulating in the Gallery with our mixed show. We shall be having the first of several rolling changes to the show shortly, so if you haven’t yet been down…. Another reminder that we shall close for a week on Wednesday 7th February and reopen on Wednesday 14th February, as we are moving house. Any queries will be dealt with promptly as soon as we reopen.

We have six new artists showing with us during that exhibition. Details will follow. Resident artist's latest show 18/11/2006
The preview of Phil’s latest exhibition is on Tuesday evening. There will be a variety of paintings on show. Many of his latest paintings focus on the variety of grasses found on the moors, and the distinctive patterns and rhythms that form as they move in the wind. There are also big skies and rocks.
We now have more of John Prescott’s wonderful boxes in the gallery that are already attracting enormous interest. We also have new work by the ever-popular Gilda Dickinson, a rare bird amongst artists these days in her preferred way of working outdoors. Susan Laughton has let us have some beautiful small paper based pieces based on landscape themes in rich blues and browns.
Look forward to seeing you soon.

Last week of Eric Appleton's exhibition 11/11/2006
Don’t miss the final week of Eric Appleton’s exhibition. His large, textured paintings and drawings have been very much admired by customers. Phil has the next exhibition and is very busy trying to complete all the new paintings he has planned. There are one or two which we are very excited about….
Our ‘Couple in the Window’ were whisked off to a new home in Surrey on Thursday and are already being missed. We have put our chameleon in the window but have hopes for another large sculpture we spotted in the summer.

Latest news... 01/11/2006
A piece of news for this weekend is that we shall be opening at 12.30pm on Sunday November 5th rather later than usual as we have a family party to celebrate Sue’s birthday. As mentioned in our last news, we have a new sculpture by Patricia Lacey, entitled ‘Girl Reading a Book’ which we are pleased to illustrate below. Eric Appleton’s exhibition is creating a very positive reaction from customers so try to make time to see these excellent paintings and the equally impressive drawings from life.
