Off on our holidays 20/01/2012
We have now hung work from all the artists that we enthused about last week and excellent they look too. Do try to make it down to the gallery to see them! Just to let you know, we will be zooming off for a winter break soon and the gallery will therefore be closed from the 30th January and will reopen on Saturday February 11th at 10am.

Happy New Year 14/01/2012
Well we are delighted to bring some beautiful new artwork to your attention so early in 2012. We have been making plans for this year for quite a while and feel that the exhibitions lined up are probably going to be some of the best ever seen in The Calder Gallery! The first changes are happening during the coming week with work from artists new to us: Caroline Johnson, Stella Mays, Catherine McGrath and Steve Read.
First off we have Caroline’s delicate watercolour drawings of Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. Done especially for the Gallery, they capture the character of the town beautifully. Then we are thrilled to be showing Stella’s amazing wildlife paintings, particularly as she was voted BBC Wildlife artist of 2011. Stella’s highly realistic and detailed paintings of wild animals in their respective habitats, captures their beauty and power in pastel. In contrast to these we have wonderfully vivid, textured and colourful paintings of West Yorkshire townscapes, real and imagined by Catherine. Working mainly in triptych format (three canvases forming one image) her vibrant works are instantly recognisable as local mill towns.
In total contrast to these are Steve Read’s graceful and sophisticated images of beaches and beach huts, in cool colours with a limited palette reminiscent of 1920s posters of exotic places.
Stop Press We have just obtained an original Kate Lycett painting! This exciting event is a foretaste of the one-person show that Kate is having here later this year. Elland Bridge is another lovely work in Kate’s inimitable style. See it before it goes.
